More Benefits of a Good
Sense of Humor
Aside from the health benefits provided by laughing and
humor, there are tons of other advantages. Situations at work
and home will improve with a good dose of
humor.
While you may feel that your work environment is serious, an
appropriate sense of humor can be extremely beneficial.
Supervisors appreciate employees with a proper sense of humor.
I am not suggesting that you take your job lightly, just take
opportunities to inject a little humor when appropriate. Humor
can also help your work performance by increasing your energy
and creativity.
New at
your job? Become an effective employee by using humor at the
office. People gravitate towards those who use humor, providing
you with ample opportunity to meet new people and establish
yourself as a person who is open and interested in becoming a
part of a team.
Humor
has been shown to improve morale, reduce hostility, relieve
tense situations, and deflect criticism at work. Other benefits
include building rapport, relaxing others, and making
information presented in groups more memorable. Believe it or
not, using playful jokes can actually enhance financial
discussions by relaxing the situation and allowing you to
negotiate a better wage.
Imagine
a typical meeting in your workplace. In many settings, meetings
are very dry and (let’s face it) boring. That’s the reason so
many people dread meetings. What would happen if you slipped
some humor onto the agenda? In general, a meeting with a
lighter tone will keep participants engaged and
focused.
Laughter
can also stimulate creativity, thus enhancing productivity. The
main caveat is to keep the humor germane to the point of the
meeting to keep things focused.
Humor is
an attractive quality. Men and women are generally attracted to
others with a good sense of humor. Earnest and sincere does not
have to equal serious and dour. You can convey your best self
without taking yourself too seriously.
Think
about what attracts you to someone. Is it a person who is
always very solemn? Or is it a person who is willing to find
the funny in situations? Most of us prefer the person who can
discover the levity in life.
Laughter
is a good gauge of a healthy relationship. If you are laughing
with your partner, chances are your relationship is doing well.
Share humorous items from the internet or newspaper, laugh at
yourself, and hang up funny cartoons on the
refrigerator.
Humor is
even effective at defusing tense situations – just make sure it
is not in poor taste or a barb disguised as a joke.
Use
humor on a regular basis within your family to keep
communications open, reduce stress, increase affection and
commitment, and even decrease the number of arguments! Read
funny books together, share silly songs and jokes, or play
games.
The best
games for promoting laughter are ones that give everyone the
chance to tickle the collective family funnybone.

interchanges.
Humor in
life can make both work and home relationships prosper. Take a
moment to reflect on ways to bring a laugh to those around you
and everyone wins!
